Women with PCOS often have higher levels of androgens, which can cause acne, excess hair growth, and other symptoms. Berberine has been shown to lower androgen levels in women with PCOS. A randomized controlled trial of 102 women with PCOS found that taking 500 mg of berberine twice a day for 3 months reduced levels of testosterone, a type of androgen.
(3) Dosage of Berberine: The optimal dosage of berberine for PCOS is not yet established. However, most studies have used doses ranging from 500 mg to 1500 mg per day. It is suggested that one should start with a low dosage and gradually increase it as needed. It is also important to note that berberine may interact with certain medications, including blood thinners, antidepressants, and medications for diabetes. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also avoid berberine supplements.
